Brassicoraphanus
Intergeneric hybrid between cabbage and radish genera.
Brassicoraphanus, also written as × Brassicoraphanus, refers to any hybrid that crosses a plant from the genus *Brassica* (which includes cabbages and similar crops) with one from *Raphanus* (radishes). The name itself is a blend of the two genus names. This term covers both diploid and allopolyploid hybrids.
Early attempts to cross species from these two genera usually resulted in sterile or nearly sterile offspring. However, the Soviet agronomist Georgi Dmitrievich Karpechenko conducted large-scale experiments crossing *Raphanus sativus* with *Brassica oleracea*. Some of these plants were remarkable because they produced hundreds of seeds. The second generation turned out to be allopolyploids, formed when gametes with doubled chromosome numbers fused. Karpechenko realized this process had created a new species, which he felt could be called a new genus. He proposed the name *Raphanobrassica*, but the earlier name *Brassicoraphanus* has priority. Plants from this particular cross are now known as radicole. Karpechenko had hoped for a plant with cabbage leaves and a radish root, but got the opposite result. It is useful as livestock fodder, not for human consumption.
Two other fertile forms of Brassicoraphanus exist. The Raparadish group consists of allopolyploid hybrids between *Raphanus sativus* and *Brassica rapa*, also used as fodder. The Radicole group are allopolyploid hybrids between *Raphanus sativus* and *Brassica oleracea*, likewise used as fodder. Another form, Raphanofortii, is the allopolyploid hybrid between *Brassica tournefortii* and *Raphanus caudatus*. It is now thought that a large portion of flowering plants have some hybridization and polyploidization in their ancestry.
The name *Brassico-raphanus* was first published in 1825 by Augustin Sageret. He intended it as a hybrid genus name, but at the time, valid publication required the parent genera to be given in Latin, not French as he did. The hyphen was later removed following the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants, resulting in *Brassicoraphanus*. Names using the hybrid symbol × were published later, in 1929 and 1932. In 1929, Karpechenko published the name × *Raphanobrassica* for the same combination of genera. As of December 2025, sources varied on which authority to use and whether to accept either, both, or neither of the two genus names.
