Carbon arc welding (CAW) joins metals by using an electric arc between a non-consumable graphite electrode and the workpiece, heating the materials to over 3,000 °C to form a bond. As the first arc-welding method ever created, it has since been largely replaced by twin-carbon-arc welding and other techniques.

The process relies on the electric arc, first discovered by Humphry Davy in 1800 and independently repeated by Russian physicist Vasily Vladimirovich Petrov in 1802. Petrov studied the arc and suggested it could be used for welding. The method itself was invented in 1881 by Nikolay Benardos and Stanisław Olszewski, who later patented it as "Elektrogefest" ("Electric Hephaestus").

Several variations exist. Gas carbon arc welding (CAW-G) is no longer commercially significant. Other non-consumable-electrode processes—such as tungsten-arc welding (GTAW/TIG), plasma-arc welding (PAW), and atomic-hydrogen welding (AHAW)—have also replaced carbon-arc welding. A filler metal is commonly used to help bond the workpieces. Shielded carbon arc welding (CAW-S) and twin carbon arc welding (CAW-T), where the arc forms between two carbon electrodes, are additional variants.
