Classical conditioning, also called respondent or Pavlovian conditioning, is a procedure where a biologically significant stimulus—like food or a puff of air—is repeatedly paired with a neutral one, such as the sound of a triangle. The process involves an automatic, learned response that becomes linked to a specific stimulus, functioning much like a signal.
The Russian physiologist Ivan Pavlov first demonstrated this through detailed experiments with dogs, publishing his initial findings in 1903 and his major work 'Conditioned Reflexes' in 1927. While studying digestion, he noticed that the dogs salivated before being given food—for example, at the sight of the feeder or the sound of footsteps. He called this anticipatory salivation 'psychic secretion.' This type of conditioning is different from operant (or instrumental) conditioning, where the strength of a voluntary behavior is changed by reinforcement or punishment. However, classical conditioning can influence operant conditioning: classically conditioned stimuli can reinforce operant responses.
Classical conditioning is a fundamental behavioral mechanism, and researchers are beginning to understand its neural basis. Although it can be difficult to separate from other forms of associative learning—such as instrumental learning or human associative memory—several observations, especially the contingencies under which learning occurs, help distinguish them.
Along with operant conditioning, classical conditioning formed the basis of behaviorism, a school of psychology that dominated the mid-20th century and still significantly influences psychological therapy and the study of animal behavior. In classical conditioning, a conditioned stimulus (CS) is paired with an unconditioned stimulus (US).
